Chapter 32: The Benefit of Knowing the Ineffable, and How to Explain It to Others –– THE DIAMOND SUTRA (final chapter)

“Subhuti! Say that a fine individual gave gifts of great value, the likes of which would fill vast universes, with the kind intention of great benefit to everyone! Next, imagine someone aspiring to awaken to unexcelled perfect enlightenment by means of learning, comprehending, and finally, explaining to others just one verse of this Diamond Teaching. This second person’s actions would create a far, far greater benefit!”

“But, World-Honored One! How exactly are we to go about explaining it to others?”

“Subhuti! Just be sure to explain how it is that things are unexplainable and you'll do fine:

"A phantom, dewdrops, a lightning strike,
A burning candle, skewed vision, the morning star:
These six are to show you what all things are like—
They're like dreams! May you notice that all things are…"

And thus, the Buddha’s teaching drew to a close. Subhuti, the monastic and lay followers, the bodhisattvas, devas, asuras and angels rejoiced in wonder and gratitude, marveling in the event they had just witnessed.

Chapter 31: How Buddha Uses Expedient Metaphoric Denotation for the Benefit of Etherial Existences –– THE DIAMOND SUTRA

“But then, why am I using common nomenclature, like ‘selves,’ ‘beings,’ ‘lives,’ ‘living’ and even 'the soul'? (skt. atman) Does the fact that I, the Awakened Individual, use terms like ‘I,’ ‘you’ or ‘they’ indicate that I believe in real selves?”

“Of course not, World-Honored One! You use those terms as metaphorical expedients, never believing them to label the existence of ultimately real entities!”

Chapter 30: A False Proof for an Artificial Self –– THE DIAMOND SUTRA

“Imagine a quadrillion-world universe all broken up into the finest particles possible! Do you think that the total number of particles would be fantastic in number?”

“Certainly, World-Honored One! That would account for an unfathomable, immeasurable number of particles!

“But here I make note: no matter what topic you bring to the fore, O World-Honored One, you never imply that any of the subjects discussed are actual existences. To think things are actual existences would make the whole quadrillion-world universe seem to be a real one. People are entrained that the world is to be seen as a sum of a great amount of elemental particulate matter. But World-Honored One, you have taught otherwise. You say that even sub-atomic components of the finest of particles have no ultimate existence to them!”

“Yes, Subhuti, but I further elucidate: unenlightened folk are very confused regarding what they believe to be an actual self. Although nonexistent, the imagined self-reality seems to be corroborated by the common assumption that there’s a real world founded in minute structural components!”

Your Real Me

1a
Can I be straight with you?
I know it's hard to see
When you slipped beneath the waterline,
If you're asking me, you was hardly trying
Hide in daily life, pretend you're there
I've been there too...

1b
You've heard there's more to this than what we think,
They say we're caught up in our stuff
They even said there's treasure buried there
Then you listened, and you came to care
Just when you thought there's nothing new to see
You found out about your real me

2a
There's a place that you might like to go
It really isn't all that far
Shake your shell off, you might see the signs,
To where the sun shines bright and the dreams will find –
Or you can just keep tying that big black knot:
Is that all you got?

2b
Now this place it's on the brighter side--
Now it's time to take your place
Misunderstanding fades, you smile in stride
I see the world is reflecting in your eyes
Just when you thought there's nothing more to see,
You went and found your real me.
